go catholic. go green.

I learned an important lesson at the recently attended baptism... If any of my family members want to benefit our good green earth they may need to convert to Catholicism. I am quite certain that sprinkling water on the head is much more conservative than full immersion. Another option: convince the church it is the right time to update the method a bit, sort of how they updated the rules for polygamy so Utah could become a state. Another option: console yourself with this-- the end justifies the means.

Somehow I chanced upon your blog... and read "the end justifies the means"

I am in a contemplative mood today and rather than endless surfing of the web, I am going to take time and think about this...

"Does the End Justify The Means ?".
There was a point in time when I thought, "yes" !!! I was young, restless, angry, a little too energetic and filled with arrogance. In those days, I thought, what we need is a strong enough leader who can suck it in and make some hard decisions that eventually lead to world happiness even if there are a few casualties on the way.
Now, at 29, I beg to differ. At least a little. May be ends still do justify the means, but whats the guarantee that the leader who is leading us to the "good ends" is actually a selfless, righteous, sensible and strong man.

Can the world handle another Hitler, Mussolini, Stalin etc.? I don't think it would be prudent to even let such a chance exist. In hindsight, Bush probably did what I wanted to do in my younger years. Saddam was a bad man, but was it justified to just go in Iraq, against the world-at-large's wishes, and take him out ? I don't think it was right, and I am a staunch Bush opponent now, but 8-10 years ago, I might have approved of it.

Now, I believe, Whats right in one man's point of view is not going to be right in another man's view. If we were to actually find a man who thought the same way the majority did, *all the time*, then Yes, whatever he did, the ends would justify the means.

But its because of the fact that its hard to find such a guy, and that there are countless lives at stake, that the best mechanism we have is democracy. Its a foolproof way to make sure that whatever the big brother does will be in the interest of the majority.

However, I am totally against putting too much executive power in one man. So Bush's decision to allow evesdropping on its own citizens, without a warrant, is wrong in my opinion, even if it was in the best interest and intentions. He should have gone through congress.

We do have to walk a fine line though. We don't want a situation where the congress bickers and fights over what to do and then it becomes too late.

I guess, in the end, every country's citizens should really really *really* put thought in who they elect as their commander in chief. Something which Uncle Sam's children have failed to do in recent memory.

So... to answer, "Does the end justify the means?", I would say no. A better statement "majority's will to do something justifies the means".

Sorry for the ramble above :) you can delete this...
